Community Benefit Planned for “Mighty Mav” as He Battles Rare Cancer
The Ripley community is coming together to support Maverick “Mav” Speck, the young son of Michael and Katie Speck, who has been courageously battling a rare childhood cancer known as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. A benefit fundraiser is set for Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 6 p.m. at 300 County Road 739 in Ripley, Mississippi.
The event, titled Benefit for Mighty Mav, will feature $10 barbecue plates, an auction, and live music from the Thristy Nite Crew. All proceeds will go toward helping Maverick and his family as they continue this difficult journey.
Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is a type of soft tissue cancer that develops in the body’s skeletal muscle tissue. It is most often diagnosed in young children and can be aggressive, requiring extensive treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. While rare, accounting for only a small percentage of childhood cancers, it is one of the most common forms of soft tissue sarcoma in children under 10. The disease often requires long hospital stays, frequent doctor visits, and significant medical expenses, which has made community support critical for families like the Specks.
“Mighty Mav” has become a symbol of strength and hope as friends, family, and neighbors rally around him. Organizers say the benefit will not only raise funds but also lift the family’s spirits by showing them just how many people are behind them.
