Greenville 8-Year-Old Saves Grandparents’ Home from Fire
GREENVILLE, Miss. – An 8-year-old girl is being praised as a hero after quickly extinguishing a fire at her grandparents’ home.
On August 15, firefighters were dispatched to a residential blaze at a single-story brick home. When crews arrived, they found light smoke coming from the structure, but the fire had already been put out—thanks to young De’Meria Thomas.
De’Meria’s little brother alerted her to the fire, and she sprang into action, grabbing a fire extinguisher and using the P.A.S.S. method—“Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep”—a technique she had been taught. Her quick response prevented the flames from spreading and saved her grandparents’ home.
All occupants were safely outside before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported. Fire officials credited fire prevention education for playing a key role in the outcome.
The Greenville Fire Department commended De’Meria’s courage, calling her “brave and fierce” for protecting her family and home. As a special recognition, she has been invited to attend the department’s Kids Academy in June 2026 free of charge.
