Man who had been deported multiple times previously charged with assault on officer, drug charges in Blue Mountain

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — A man with an extensive criminal history in Tippah County and multiple prior deportations was arrested Friday following a traffic stop that led to several charges and an immigration detainer, according to Blue Mountain Police Chief Chris Joshlin.

Carlos Roberto Galvez was arrested Jan. 3 with assistance from the Tippah County Sheriff’s Office and is currently being held in the Tippah County Jail. Authorities said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a hold on Galvez.

Galvez was charged with assault on a police officer, driving under the influence, driving without a license, providing false information to law enforcement, and careless driving, Joshlin said.

According to police, Galvez has a long criminal history in Tippah County dating back more than two decades. His past convictions include felony domestic violence and a drive-by shooting case from the early 2000s. He has also been federally convicted of distributing more than 500 grams of methamphetamine and previously served time in federal prison.

Joshlin said Galvez has been deported at least five times, and investigators believe he has used multiple aliases over the years, making it difficult to compile a complete record of his criminal history.

“This is someone who has been on law enforcement’s radar for a long time,” Joshlin said. “Because of the use of false identities, it’s challenging to track every case tied to him, but his record is extensive.”

Galvez remains in custody as the case moves forward, and officials said further charges or federal action are possible.
