PONTOTOC, Miss. – Testimony on Thursday in the capital murder trial of Jeffrey Spence centered on his daughter, Caitlin Spence, who told jurors her father admitted killing her boyfriend, 36-year-old Kirby Carpenter, in November 2022.
Caitlin testified that her father confessed while they were living in Virginia months after Carpenter’s death. She said he told her it was not her job to ask questions, only to focus on raising her daughter. She also acknowledged that Carpenter had been a drug dealer and abusive partner, but maintained that her father ultimately admitted responsibility for the shotgun killing.
The prosecution also presented testimony from law enforcement officers who recovered a loaded shotgun, cash, and a Faraday bag from the Spence home in Virginia. Investigators believe Jeffrey Spence disabled his phone while traveling back to Mississippi to carry out the crime.
Defense attorneys worked to discredit Caitlin, highlighting her plea deal for accessory after the fact and pointing to texts suggesting her father was in Virginia at the time of the killing.
The trial was moved to Pontotoc County because of extensive publicity in Tippah County. It is expected to continue into next week.
