State Department says hundreds of U.S. citizens in Mexico called crisis hotline after cartel leader’s death

The State Department said it received hundreds of calls from U.S. citizens in Mexico to its 24/7 crisis hotline after Mexican authorities killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho,’ CNN reported Monday.

Mexican authorities killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes on Sunday, CNN reported. He was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

CNN reported that violent clashes erupted in parts of Mexico after the killing, prompting the surge of calls to the State Department hotline.
