Investigators Probe Arson at Jackson Jewish Congregation

Jackson fire officials responded early Saturday to a fire at Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi. Fire investigators determined the blaze was intentionally set, causing significant damage to the administrative and library areas of the historic building, which dates to 1860.

A 19-year-old man, Stephen Spencer Pittman, admitted himself to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with non-life-threatening burn injuries and was taken into custody. Pittman has been charged with arson, and additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues, according to authorities.

The FBI, ATF, Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Jackson Fire Department Arson Unit, and Jackson Police Department are assisting in the investigation. State charges are pending, and officials said they may pursue additional charges at the state level.

Due to fire, smoke, and water damage, the building is currently unusable for services. Beth Israel Congregation is one of Mississippi’s oldest Jewish institutions, founded in 1860. Authorities said the investigation remains active, and more details will be released as they become available.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves expressed support for the congregation, calling the act heinous and promising that the perpetrator will face full legal consequences. Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell also emphasized the state’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable at both the state and federal levels.
