Historical marker honoring Mississippi transportation commissioner unveiled in Cleveland

A historical marker honoring Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons was unveiled Monday in Cleveland, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said.

The marker commemorates Simmons’ contributions during his service as a Mississippi state senator from 1993 until he became transportation commissioner in 2020, the agency said.

The department said the marker pays tribute to Simmons’ leadership and dedication, noting his role in advancing infrastructure and improving the way of life in Cleveland and Bolivar County.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation posted photos of the ceremony on social media, the agency said.
