MDOT urges drivers to follow safety tips ahead of March 11 storms
The Mississippi Department of Transportation warned drivers to prepare for storms expected across much of the state on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and offered a list of safety tips.
MDOT advised motorists to get updates from trusted weather services and to check the MDOT Traffic app for road conditions before driving. The agency urged drivers to stay weather-aware as spring storms arrive.
MDOT repeated the safety slogan “When thunder roars, go indoors,” and said lightning can be hotter than the sun and deadly. The agency also warned against trying to outrun a tornado in a vehicle and recommended seeking sturdy shelter rather than using an overpass.
The department said hail can do more damage to a moving car than to a parked one and urged drivers to get under cover rather than continue driving during hail. MDOT also told motorists never to drive around road barricades and to follow the advice to ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’ when roads are covered with water.
MDOT closed by telling motorists to take note and take care as the state heads into the spring storm season.
