Mid-South faces uncertain winter weather forecast this weekend

The Mid-South is expected to experience winter weather this weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis. However, forecasts for snowfall vary widely among models, with uncertainty centered on two main ingredients.

These ingredients include a large upper-level low off California, which will bring moisture, and an upper-level disturbance over western Canada that influences how much moisture reaches the region. Currently, these features are located thousands of miles away from the Mid-South and from each other, leading to differing predictions about snowfall amounts.

Model disagreements could mean the difference between as little as 2 inches of snow or as much as 15 inches. Additionally, there is uncertainty about how far north freezing rain could fall. Despite these variances, meteorologists agree on one point: the region will experience cold temperatures due to Arctic air moving from northern Canada.

The National Weather Service said more specific information will be available as the storm system develops over the next few days. Residents are advised to prepare for potentially significant winter weather.
