Miss. DOT warns political signs banned on highway right of way ahead of Tuesday primary

The Mississippi Department of Transportation warned candidates and campaigns that state law prohibits political signs on highway right of way ahead of Tuesday’s primary elections, the department said in a social media post.

The department said the restriction covers shoulders, mowed areas and, in some locations, extends as far as 300 feet from the centerline of a state-maintained highway.

MDOT called the rule a safety issue and urged candidates’ staff and volunteers to keep signs out of the right of way to avoid hazards and potential violations.

For information about right-of-way distances in specific areas along state-maintained highways, MDOT advised contacting the local MDOT maintenance facility.
