Mississippi auditor creates nonprofit spending database after finding state couldn’t tally funding

The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor said Wednesday it has launched an online Nonprofit Spending Dashboard after finding that no one in state government could determine the total amount of taxpayer money going to nonprofits or produce a complete list of recipients.

The auditor’s office said the dashboard, on the agency’s website, allows any Mississippian to search every nonprofit that has received government funds since 2021.

The office said its review also found that some state agencies request millions of dollars from taxpayers for website changes. The auditor’s office said it demonstrated the ability to provide new services to the public without seeking additional funding.

The auditor’s office said its mission is to increase transparency in state government and that the dashboard is part of that effort.
