Mississippi Commission announces TAP funding for Meridian-area pedestrian projects
Commissioner Willie Simmons, chairman of the Mississippi Transportation Commission, hosted a check presentation ceremony in Meridian to announce several 2026 Transportation Alternatives Program awards, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said.
MDOT said recipients include the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors for Phase II of the Sowashee Creek Walking Trail; the city of Meridian for pedestrian walkways in the Medical District and for downtown; the town of Marion for Confederate Drive pedestrian improvements; the Kemper County Economic Development Authority for rehabilitation and construction of sidewalks; and East Mississippi Community College for a multi-use pathway to connect existing sidewalks.
The Transportation Alternatives Program uses federal funds that can cover up to 80% of the total eligible project cost, MDOT said.
MDOT said it invites eligible project sponsors to apply for Transportation Alternatives funding and works with successful applicants to ensure federal and state requirements are met and projects are completed.
