Mississippi Department of Transportation issues travel advisory amid Winter Storm Fern
The Mississippi Department of Transportation on Thursday issued a travel advisory urging motorists to stay off the roads unless necessary. The agency reports ice on roads, bridges, and overpasses across 26 counties due to Winter Storm Fern.
Counties experiencing hazardous conditions include Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, and Yalobusha.
MDOT Executive Director Brad White urged drivers to allow space for crews working to keep roads open and to exercise caution amid changing conditions. ‘Please allow space for our crews to work as we work to keep roads open during this winter storm. If you have to travel, remain cautious of changing road conditions. We strongly discourage travel unless it’s an emergency,’ White said.
