The Mississippi Department of Transportation issued a winter weather alert early Wednesday, warning of hazardous road conditions across the state.

Both directions of Interstate 55 from the Mississippi state line to north of Yalobusha are experiencing severe icing and extreme congestion, according to MDOT. The agency advises motorists to avoid these routes. In Yalobusha County, reports include fallen trees, power lines, and storm debris blocking the roadway.

Similarly, Interstate 22 from the Mississippi state line to Potts Camp in Marshall and Benton counties is also affected by severe icing and congestion, MDOT said. Multiple counties are reporting icy conditions on roads and bridges, including Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, Yalobusha, and Yazoo.

MDOT emphasized the importance of safety, urging drivers to stay off affected roadways. The department’s traffic app and website provide the latest updates on road conditions. The MDOT Traffic app is available on the App Store and Google Play, and updates can be found at MDOTtraffic.com.

The agency reiterated that road conditions are dangerous and that travelers should exercise caution or avoid travel altogether until conditions improve.
