Mississippi DOT lauds sheriff’s offices for inmate litter cleanup
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) said inmate crews working with county sheriff’s departments removed thousands of bags of litter from state-maintained highways between July 2024 and June 2025 and recognized three counties for their performance.
MDOT said Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker and his crew collected 4,979 bags of litter and earned a second-place plaque for their work.
MDOT said it provides safety vests, gloves and bags for the program, while local sheriff’s departments supervise the inmate crews that perform the roadside cleanup.
MDOT said Itawamba County Sheriff Mitch Nabors and his squad secured second place in District 1. The agency said Pontotoc County Sheriff Leo Musk and his team won two first-place awards — a statewide “Exemplary Performance” award from Keep Mississippi Beautiful and the MDOT District 1 “Outstanding Performance” award, which Northern Transportation District Commissioner John Caldwell commemorated last week at a Pontotoc County Board of Supervisors meeting.
MDOT said a cleaner highway system is safer and encouraged residents to thank the county sheriff’s departments for their work in the inmate litter program.
