Mississippi DOT promotes RCUT ‘J-turn’ to reduce severe crashes

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said its Restricted Crossing U-turn design, sometimes called a J-turn or superstreet, redirects side-road traffic to reduce the risk of severe crashes.

In a social media post, the agency said the configuration prevents drivers on side roads from going straight across or turning left onto a divided highway. Instead, drivers turn right and use a nearby, designated U-turn to continue in the other direction, the post said.

MDOT said the design aims to minimize higher-severity collisions, such as right-angle or T-bone crashes, and to simplify decision-making for drivers.

The department pointed readers to a video explaining how the intersections work and included hashtags promoting the effort: #MShwys, #RCUT, #Jturn, #MDOTcares and #DriveSmartMS.
