Mississippi DOT warns of severe weather, urges motorists to avoid travel

The Mississippi Department of Transportation warned Tuesday, March 15, 2026, that severe weather was expected across the state and urged motorists to avoid travel if possible, according to a department social media post.

MDOT told drivers to check the MDOT Traffic app or MDOTtraffic.com for updated road conditions and to obey barricades, saying they are intended to protect lives. The department reiterated the safety slogan “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” for roads covered by water and advised against trying to outrun a tornado in a vehicle or sheltering under bridges or overpasses.

MDOT also warned that hail can be especially dangerous for people in moving vehicles and urged drivers to find shelter until it passes. The agency advised motorists to slow down during heavy rain, disable cruise control to reduce the risk of hydroplaning, and remain alert for debris from high winds, including fallen trees and power lines.

The department recommended getting weather updates from trusted sources such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center and following the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency for emergency communications, according to the post.
