Mississippi reports icy roads across 27 counties amid freezing temperatures

Mississippi is experiencing a cold snap, with temperatures dropping significantly overnight. As of 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, 27 counties in North Mississippi reported ice on roads and bridges, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Counties with ice reports include Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, and Yalobusha.

Officials warn that temperatures will continue to fall, increasing the risk of black ice formation. Black ice is often transparent and difficult to detect, making driving hazardous even when roads appear clear. Authorities advise motorists to avoid travel unless necessary and to stay updated through the Mississippi Department of Transportation Traffic app or website.

MDOT recommends that travelers exercise caution and only drive for emergencies until conditions improve. Drivers are urged to stay safe during the cold night and monitor official updates for the latest road conditions.
