National Weather Service says thunderstorms can be deadly

The National Weather Service warned Thursday that thunderstorms are sometimes underestimated as a serious threat and can be deadly.

The agency said strong winds can turn tree branches and ordinary loose objects into dangerous projectiles. It advised trimming trees and picking up loose items to help keep communities safe.

The NWS said lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a storm. It urged people to get everyone inside at the first sign of thunder or lightning and to stay indoors until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning.

More information is available on the agency’s safety page at weather.gov/safety/thunderstorm, the National Weather Service said.
