Organizers of Rip Current Awareness Week urged beachgoers on spring break to learn how to spot rip currents, saying the hazards can be subtle and dangerous, according to the campaign’s social media posts.

The posts said differences in water texture, color and movement can indicate a rip current. Organizers said those clues can help people decide whether it is safe to enter the water.

Campaign organizers advised anyone unsure about conditions not to go into the water and to stay alert while vacationing at the beach, according to the social media message.
