State office finds hundreds of millions in waste across government
A state office said it has identified hundreds of millions of dollars in waste across state government, citing spending in areas that include healthcare, services for undocumented immigrants and unused office space, the office said.
The office said agencies have purchased television screens priced at $5,800 apiece and flagged other costly expenditures, according to the statement.
Analysts in the office said Mississippi car-tag fees are the second-highest in the nation and called attention to what they described as outrageously high fees paid by taxpayers.
The office said that if taxpayers are expected to pay some of the highest fees in the country, state government must ensure those dollars go to priorities such as teacher and police salaries, and roads and bridges, rather than expensive electronics.
