Weather Service Warns Against Using Mobile Homes and Vehicles as Tornado Shelters

The National Weather Service in Memphis, Tennessee, issued a safety reminder about tornado shelters. The agency highlighted that mobile homes, vehicles, and highway overpasses are among the worst options for sheltering from a tornado.

Officials advise residents to seek designated tornado shelters or sturdy buildings when severe weather threatens. Using inappropriate shelters can increase the risk of injury or death during a tornado.

The weather service emphasized the importance of planning ahead and knowing where to go in severe weather situations. It also shared tips for identifying safe shelter options before and during storms.

The reminder comes as part of the agency’s efforts to promote public safety and preparedness during tornado season. Residents are encouraged to review safety guidelines and stay updated on weather alerts.
