Winter Storm Fern Shuts Down Roads in Northern Mississippi
Road conditions in northern Mississippi remain hazardous Saturday as Winter Storm Fern continues to impact the region, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
As of 12:30 p.m., some routes are still experiencing severe icing and congestion. Officials warn that even passable roads may not be safe for travel.
MDOT’s latest update shows routes in blue are passable but still icy, while red indicates severe icing and extreme congestion, prompting officials to advise drivers to avoid those roads if possible. Orange routes are passable but have lane blockages from fallen trees or down power lines.
The department noted that roads were less hazardous on Tuesday, Jan. 27, when temperatures rose above freezing, allowing for effective ice removal. Authorities encourage motorists to check live conditions via the MDOT Traffic app or at MDOTtraffic.com.
There have been no reports of major accidents or injuries linked to the storm so far, but officials emphasize caution for travelers in the area.
