Mississippi Democrats see glimmer of hope after primary turnout

Mississippi Democrats are cautiously optimistic after recent primary election results, which suggest increased engagement among Democratic voters. While Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith remains the favorite for re-election, Democratic turnout has provided some hope for a potential shift in November.

Across the nation, Democrats point to strong primary and special election turnout as signs of momentum. They believe these results, combined with President Donald Trump’s unpopularity, could help Democrats gain control of the U.S. House and possibly the Senate in the upcoming midterms.

In Texas, a record 2.3 million voters participated in the Democratic Senate primary, with James Talarico defeating U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett. The high turnout occurred despite a competitive Republican primary featuring Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton. Some analysts see this as a possible indicator of Republican vulnerability in the fall.

Mississippi’s recent primary saw more voters participating in the Republican contest for Senate than in the Democratic race. About 156,000 voted in the Republican primary for Hyde-Smith, while just under 150,000 cast ballots in the Democratic primary, which was won by Lowndes County District Attorney Scott Colom.

Historically, Mississippi’s primary turnout has favored Republicans, especially in midterm elections. For example, in 2018, more than 157,000 voters participated in the Republican primary for Wicker, compared to 87,931 in the Democratic contest. Similarly, in 2019, Republican primaries for governor attracted significantly more voters than Democratic primaries.

Despite the historical trend, some analysts note that the recent Democratic primary turnout suggests potential for surprises in November. They point to increased Democratic engagement as a sign that the political landscape in Mississippi might be shifting and that the party could challenge Republican dominance in the state this cycle.
