Mississippi governor appoints Celeste Embrey Wilson to state Supreme Court

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has appointed Celeste Embrey Wilson to the state Supreme Court, filling a vacancy created by the confirmation of Justice Robert Chamberlin to the federal bench.

Wilson, currently a Circuit Court judge in DeSoto County, will serve until the seat is permanently filled through a special election. She is scheduled to take her seat on August 1, Reeves announced Monday.

“Judge Wilson has dedicated her career to serving the people of Mississippi with integrity, fairness, and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law,” Reeves said in a statement. “Her extensive judicial and prosecutorial experience, proven leadership within Mississippi’s court system, and deep understanding of our legal system make her an outstanding choice.”

Wilson has served as a Circuit Court judge since February 2017, initially in the 17th Judicial District and now in the 21st Judicial District. Before her judicial career, she was an assistant district attorney for the 17th Judicial District for seven years.

She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Memphis School of Law and her bachelor’s degree from Delta State University. Reeves has one other appointment to make to the Mississippi Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by James Maxwell, who was also confirmed to the federal judiciary by President Trump.
