Mississippi House Speaker Jason White announced the creation of six new House Select Committees Tuesday, aimed at studying critical issues facing the state. The committees will develop policy recommendations ahead of the 2027 legislative session.
White said the committees will focus on government efficiency, property taxes, redistricting, judicial operations, school consolidation, and specialty schools. He emphasized the importance of thoughtful study and stakeholder engagement in crafting solutions.
The House speaker highlighted the committees’ role in shaping legislation that reflects responsible governance. White noted previous success from similar committees, which led to substantial reforms, and said this proactive approach would help set clear priorities for the next session.
The Committee on Government Efficiency will explore ways to streamline state operations and improve transparency. Co-chairs Hank Zuber and Steve Lott will lead this effort, with members including Elliot Burch, Jim Estrada, and others.
The Property Taxes Committee aims to evaluate reforms that provide relief to homeowners and businesses, ensuring fairness in local government funding. Co-chairs Trey Lamar and Shane Barnett will oversee this work, alongside a diverse group of members.
The Redistricting Committee will review districting processes to ensure transparency and fairness in future reapportionment efforts. Co-chairs Noah Sanford and Kevin Horan will lead this initiative, with members including Scott Bounds and Brad Mattox.
Other committees will examine judicial operations, school consolidation, and specialty schools, each led by designated co-chairs and members. White said these efforts will help develop informed, conservative policies that serve Mississippi’s residents.
