Mississippi to distribute 30,000 free smoke alarms statewide amid rising fire deaths

The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Mississippi Insurance Department will distribute more than 30,000 smoke alarms for installation in homes statewide at no cost to residents, the Magnolia Tribune reported Nov. 6, 2026.

The alarms use 10-year lithium batteries and were purchased with $500,000 in grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Magnolia Tribune reported. Firefighters making installation visits will share home fire escape-planning tips and hand out 30,000 educational brochures on smoke alarms, cooking safety and general fire prevention.

The Magnolia Tribune noted the effort comes as Mississippi has reported 67 fire deaths so far in 2026 and has consistently ranked among the top 10 states nationally for fire deaths per capita.
