Vice President JD Vance on Friday convened the first meeting of a new anti-fraud task force focused on federal benefit programs. The effort comes as the Trump administration seeks to demonstrate a crackdown on potential misuse of social programs.
Vance stated that the federal government has historically not prioritized fraud prevention and emphasized the need for a coordinated, whole-government approach. “This is not just the theft of the American people’s money,” he said. “It’s also the theft of critical services that the American people rely on.”
The initiative aligns with President Donald Trump’s focus on addressing fraud amid voter concerns about affordability ahead of the November midterm elections. The effort follows allegations of fraud involving daycare centers operated by Somali residents in Minneapolis, which prompted a federal immigration crackdown and widespread protests.
Last month, Vance announced a temporary halt on some Medicaid funding in Minnesota until state officials addressed federal concerns. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat and Trump’s 2024 vice-presidential running mate, criticized the move as “a campaign of retribution,” accusing the Trump administration of using federal power against blue states.
The task force includes about half of President Trump’s Cabinet, the head of a new Justice Department division focused on prosecuting fraud, and FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, who described fraud as an urgent crisis that threatens social trust and national stability. Ferguson warned that if left unaddressed, fraud could “swiftly unravel” the nation’s social fabric.
Joining the effort was Colin McDonald, recently confirmed as assistant attorney general overseeing the new Justice Department division dedicated to fraud prosecution. While the Justice Department has historically prosecuted fraud through its Criminal Division, the Trump administration argues that a dedicated division is necessary to combat widespread abuse.
