About 450,000 federal student loan borrowers say they were defrauded by their colleges and are seeking to have their loans erased, but the class-action lawsuit has been tangled up in courts for years, plaintiffs said.
The litigation began as Sweet v. DeVos in 2019, changed to Sweet v. Cardona during the Biden administration and is now Sweet v. McMahon, plaintiffs said, reflecting changes in the identity of the education secretary named in the case.
The borrowers allege their schools engaged in fraud and have asked the government to cancel their federal student debt, according to the plaintiffs.
The case remains unresolved and has been delayed by repeated legal challenges, plaintiffs said. The litigation continues to move through the courts as the parties await a final ruling.
