Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Wednesday that the Gordie Howe International Bridge between the U.S. and Canada will open soon, despite previous threats from former President Donald Trump to block its construction.
Whitmer, a Democrat, said this is the first new bridge connecting Michigan to Canada in more than a century. She emphasized the significance of the project for the region’s trade and infrastructure.
Trump had publicly threatened to prevent the bridge’s opening during his presidency, but those threats did not materialize into any action that halted the project. The governor’s statement confirms that plans for the bridge’s opening are moving forward as scheduled.
