Trump Meets Xi Jinping in Beijing Amid Tensions Over Trade and Taiwan

President Donald Trump was greeted with elaborate ceremonies by Chinese officials as he arrived in Beijing Thursday for a meeting with President Xi Jinping. The event took place outside the Great Hall of the People, featuring military displays, music, and children waving flags.

Trump arrived in his armored vehicle and shook hands with Xi before the two leaders introduced each other to their respective delegations. They later posed for photos beneath a red-and-yellow canopy as the U.S. national anthem and China’s national anthem played in the background, according to a pool report.

Trump described the ceremony as an honor and praised the children present, saying they represented much to both nations. The visit signals a critical moment in U.S.-China relations, with discussions expected to focus on trade, security, and efforts to stabilize strained ties amid ongoing disputes over Taiwan and trade policies.

During the ceremony, Trump observed military marches and musical performances by Chinese bands. Xi Jinping was seen shaking hands with several of Trump’s top advisors, including policy adviser Stephen Miller and communications director Steven Cheung. The official bilateral talks following the opening ceremony were brief, with Xi’s translator expressing anticipation for discussions on issues important to both countries and the world.
