New Albany Man Found Dead; Four Massive Pythons Rescued From Home

NEW ALBANY, Miss. – Authorities say a New Albany man was found dead outside his home, and inside the residence officers discovered four massive Burmese pythons, including one measuring about 18 feet long and weighing an estimated 180 pounds.

The deceased man was identified as Michael Spotts. Police believe he died of natural causes.

According to the Gulf Coast Reptile Refuge and Tortoise Sanctuary, which now has custody of the snakes, the reptiles were rescued in an urgent operation coordinated with the Oktibbeha County Humane Society – Starkville Animal Shelter. The organizations said the animals faced possible euthanasia if not removed immediately.

Rescue crews traveled hours to secure the snakes, which range in length from roughly 10 to 16 feet, with the largest weighing between 150 and 200 pounds. Refuge staff noted that some of the snakes were overfed and obese.

The reptiles are currently housed in temporary crates while the sanctuary builds appropriately sized enclosures. The refuge said its long-term goal is to place at least some of the snakes with reputable zoos or experienced large-constrictor keepers, due to the significant cost and care requirements.

The Gulf Coast Reptile Refuge is asking for donations to help cover enclosure materials and veterinary care. More details and updates are available on the organization’s Facebook page.
