Ripley Tiger Football hires Rico McDonald as new head coach

BREAKING NEWS: Former Ripley High School standout running back and current Defensive Backs coach Rico McDonald will be the school’s next head football coach according to Principal Anita Hood.

The school announced the decision, today, after a month-long search to fill the Tigers’ top spot following the retirement of Perry Liles after five seasons.The promotion of McDonald to head coach must have South Tippah School Board approval.

McDonald began his coaching career as a Ripley assistant in 2004 and brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to the position. He spent most of those years (17) at his old high school stomping grounds where he rushed for a record-setting 1900 yards as a senior, serving in roles of defensive coordinator and as well as coaching running backs and wide receivers.

Following an All-State high school football career, McDonald took his talents to Delta State University where he led the program to the 2000 Division II National Championship. He ended his college career as Delta State’s All-Time leader in rushing with 3,285 yards. The talented athlete was inducted into the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
