Hardeman County Jail Inmate Escapes After Stealing Sheriff’s Patrol Vehicle

HARDEMAN COUNTY, Tenn. — Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped custody earlier today after stealing a marked patrol vehicle from the Hardeman County Jail, according to the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the inmate, identified as Randy Cannon of Whiteville, gained access to a Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit that was parked on jail property and undergoing maintenance. Investigators said Cannon entered the vehicle and drove away from the facility without authorization.

The escape occurred during normal jail operations. Jail staff immediately initiated escape protocols and notified surrounding law enforcement agencies. Multiple agencies are now assisting in the search.

Authorities said the location of both the inmate and the stolen patrol unit is currently unknown. Cannon should be considered dangerous, and the public is advised not to approach him if located.

Anyone with information about Cannon’s whereabouts or the stolen patrol vehicle is urged to contact Hardeman County Dispatch at (731) 658-1902 or call 911.

The sheriff’s office said it is reviewing all procedures related to the incident and will provide additional updates as more information becomes available. Public safety remains the agency’s top priority.
