Ice-covered roads reported in 14 Mississippi counties, MDOT urges caution

Ice has been reported on roads and bridges in 14 counties in northern Mississippi as of 8:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The affected counties include Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Coahoma, DeSoto, Lafayette, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, and Tunica.

MDOT clarified that the reports concern state-maintained roads, such as interstates and highways, and do not include local roads. The department urged motorists to only travel if necessary and to exercise extreme caution if they must drive. MDOT crews continue working to clear the roads during this winter event.

Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about current road conditions by downloading the MDOT Traffic app from the App Store or Google Play or by visiting MDOTtraffic.com. The department emphasized the importance of giving MDOT crews space while they work to clear the ice and snow.
