Ice covers roads in 25 Mississippi counties amid winter weather

Ice has begun to form on roads across northern Mississippi, prompting travel advisories. As of 7:45 a.m. on January 24, 2026, 25 counties reported ice on roads and bridges, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Counties affected include Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, and Yalobusha.

MDOT officials warned that conditions are expected to worsen over the next few hours. Travelers are advised to only drive if necessary and to exercise extreme caution. The roads are very slippery, and even careful drivers could encounter problems.

Motorists are encouraged to stay updated on road conditions through the MDOT Traffic app or visit MDOTtraffic.com for real-time information. Officials emphasized the importance of winter safety and cautious driving during this weather event.
