May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month; NWS warns spring sun can rival July
May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a period when public health organizations encourage prevention and early detection, officials said.
The National Weather Service warned that spring sunshine can be as strong as late July and urged people to take precautions against ultraviolet exposure.
The agency offers sun-safety guidance on its website, including information about heat and UV risks at https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat-uv, the National Weather Service said.
Health groups and federal agencies mark the month to highlight the risks of skin cancer and to promote measures that reduce UV exposure, officials said.
