MDOT Prepares for Historic Winter Storm Fern with Large-Scale Pretreatment
Michigan Department of Transportation officials announced plans to implement the state’s largest pretreatment operation on Friday, Jan. 23, in anticipation of Winter Storm Fern. The operation aims to mitigate the storm’s impact on road conditions.
The National Weather Service forecasts historic icing across Michigan’s northernmost counties, which could lead to dangerous travel conditions. MDOT Executive Director Brad White emphasized the agency’s efforts, praising maintenance crews for their extensive work in preparing roads for the storm.
“I am very appreciative of our maintenance crews who worked hard in this historic road pretreatment operation,” White said. “We are using all our resources to prepare for what is forecast to be a devastating ice storm. Please be aware, despite our best efforts, the extreme nature of the storm could still result in road closures and the need for the public to avoid travel entirely.”
MDOT encourages travelers to stay informed and exercise caution during the storm. Additional details on pretreatment efforts and winter safety tips are available at the agency’s website.
