Mississippi braces for dangerous winter storm with ice and power outages

A significant ice storm is affecting a large portion of Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Trees and limbs are falling, leading to power outages across the state.

Roads remain icy throughout northern and central Mississippi, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay home and avoid travel. Temperatures are expected to continue dropping, with wind chills in the teens or below, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for those exposed for extended periods.

Warming shelters are open statewide, and residents in need of assistance can find a list of available facilities at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s website. The agency reports ongoing contact with all 82 counties as they coordinate response efforts.

Officials emphasize the importance of taking care of oneself, neighbors, and pets during the storm. They urge Mississippians to stay safe and help prevent further hazards during this winter weather event.
