Mississippi faces severe winter storm with icy roads, power outages
North Mississippi is under a winter storm warning, with freezing temperatures and icy precipitation affecting the region, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
MDOT reports icy roads and bridges across 25 counties in northern Mississippi. While crews continue to treat highways, officials warn conditions are expected to deteriorate. Residents are advised to avoid travel if possible.
The state is coordinating with local emergency managers statewide. So far, 32 counties have submitted 87 requests for state assistance. Approximately 1,100 residents are without power, and utility providers are working to restore service. That number is expected to rise as the storm continues.
More than 40 warming shelters are open or scheduled to open across Mississippi. For the latest updates on shelters and storm conditions, residents can visit the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s website.
The State of Emergency remains in effect until at least Jan. 27. Authorities recommend residents monitor weather forecasts throughout the weekend and stay safe during the storm.
