Mississippi governor requests federal disaster aid after winter storms

Governor Tate Reeves has requested a Major Disaster Declaration for multiple counties affected by severe winter storms that swept across Mississippi from Jan. 23 to Jan. 27, 2026, according to a news release.

The request includes provisions for individual assistance, disaster unemployment benefits, and public assistance to support local governments with debris removal and recovery efforts. Reeves said the state has been working closely with FEMA, state agencies, and local officials to assess damage and ensure the federal thresholds are met.

Reeves emphasized that the state is committed to helping Mississippians recover from what he described as a historic winter weather event. He added that the request could be amended if additional damages are identified and validated, potentially expanding aid to more counties.

The governor stated that Mississippi will continue to utilize all available tools to assist residents and local governments. The effort remains ongoing as officials evaluate the full extent of the storm’s impact.
