Mississippi officials warn of black ice dangers after sunny day

Mississippi Department of Transportation officials are warning drivers about black ice formation tonight following a sunny day that helped improve road conditions. As temperatures drop, any remaining water on the roads could freeze, creating dangerous, invisible patches of ice.

MDOT advises drivers to pay close attention to bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze faster. Roads that appear glossy or dark may be slick and should be treated as skating rinks, officials said.

Authorities urge drivers to slow down, avoid using cruise control, and maintain ample space between vehicles. They also recommend being especially cautious in areas prone to black ice to prevent accidents.
