Mississippi residents advised to prepare vehicles for winter storm

Mississippi residents are advised to prepare their vehicles ahead of Winter Storm Fern, which is expected to bring winter weather this weekend, according to local safety officials.

Drivers are encouraged to inspect key vehicle components, including batteries and charging systems, to ensure optimal performance. Checking the cooling system, including flushing and adding new antifreeze, is also recommended. Brake systems should be tested to confirm proper function.

Other preparations include verifying the heater works, inspecting defrosters and windshield wipers for clear visibility, and ensuring tires have adequate tread and proper pressure. Inside and outside lights should be checked and properly aimed, while oil levels and filters should be inspected. Officials also advise maintaining at least half a tank of gas to prevent fuel line freezing and to provide extra safety during emergencies.

Motorists are urged to address vehicle issues now to avoid problems during the storm, which could complicate travel and safety on the roads, according to safety experts.
