Winter Storm Fern Impacts Roads Across North Mississippi
Road conditions across north Mississippi remain challenging as Winter Storm Fern continues to affect the region, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, some routes are severely iced and congested, while others are passable but still hazardous.
Current conditions reflect a contrast from Jan. 27, when temperatures rose above freezing, allowing for more effective ice removal, MDOT said. The agency’s map indicates that routes in blue are passable but still experiencing icing, while red routes face severe icing and extreme congestion. Orange routes are passable but may have lane blockages caused by fallen trees or downed power lines.
Authorities advise drivers to exercise caution and avoid red-coded routes if possible. They emphasize that “passable” does not mean safe, especially in winter weather conditions. Motorists are encouraged to check live road updates via the MDOT Traffic app or visit MDOTtraffic.com for current information.
