2 injured in officer-involved shooting at Gulfport apartment complex
Two people were injured in an officer-involved shooting at a Gulfport apartment complex Friday night, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said.
Officers with the Gulfport Police Department responded to a report of an individual with a weapon at an apartment complex on Three Oaks Road, the department said. Upon arrival, officers located the subject and attempted to detain him.
“The subject resisted, fled, and tackled an armed individual,” the department said in a release. “During the encounter, one officer and the armed individual discharged their firearms.” Both the subject and the armed individual were struck and transported to a nearby hospital. No officers sustained physical injuries, the release said.
No identities had been released as of Saturday morning, and it remained unclear what led to the incident or what relationship, if any, existed between the two people, the department said. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and will turn over its findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation, the department said.
