Burn ban covers 60 Mississippi counties; outdoor burning restricted in many areas

Outdoor burning is prohibited in 60 of Mississippi’s 82 counties as of Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, affecting campfires, fire pits, debris burning and field burning across more than half the state.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission said the restrictions are in place statewide and noted that grilling on gas or charcoal grills remains allowed when done safely. The commission provided a map showing which counties are under the burn ban as of Oct. 26, 2026.

Burn ban expiration dates vary by county, the commission said, with most bans extending well into November. The Forestry Commission also warned that anyone caught violating a burn ban could face a misdemeanor fine of up to $500.

Separately, the National Weather Service’s weekly outlook projects that rain chances across much of Mississippi are expected to increase beginning Oct. 31; the NWS said the period from Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 carries an above-normal chance of precipitation.
