Commanders’ LT Laremy Tunsil to have surgery, sidelined indefinitely, coach says

WASHINGTON — Coach Dan Quinn said Monday that left tackle Laremy Tunsil needs surgery on his left triceps and will be sidelined indefinitely, with the team unable to determine how long he will be out until after the procedure.

Quinn said Tunsil was injured Saturday during an individual drill with pass rusher Odafe Oweh and immediately took a knee before being escorted into the facility by training staff. “It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, and especially a great player like LT,” Quinn said.

The franchise made Tunsil the highest-paid tackle in the NFL in March, and he is a five-time Pro Bowl selection who has been praised for his pass protection and run play, Quinn said. “He is really on the top of his game right now,” Quinn said.

The team turned to Brandon Coleman to fill Tunsil’s spot at left tackle. Quinn said Coleman — who started 12 games at left tackle as a rookie and made three starts last season — has played well and is a natural fit. Coleman called the move “like riding a bike” and said returning to left tackle has allowed him to showcase his athleticism and footwork.

Coleman and right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. trained with Tunsil in Alabama this summer, and Coleman said the experience changed how he prepares, citing lessons on nutrition, training and recovery. Quinn said he consulted with general manager Adam Peters and the team does not expect to pursue outside help in free agency at this time. Teammate Trent Scott said he expects Tunsil to work hard in rehab and try to return this season.
