House lawmakers to hold Biloxi roundtable on Mississippi Sound health

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives will convene in Biloxi next week for a roundtable focused on issues affecting the Mississippi Sound. The event is organized by Mississippi 4th District Congressman Mike Ezell (R), who invited colleagues from the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment.

The discussion will cover permitting reforms, the impact of the Bonnet Carré Spillway on the Mississippi Sound, and other topics overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Participants will include representatives from the Mississippi Sound Coalition and the Corps of Engineers, who will share concerns and potential solutions.

The coalition advocates for the restoration and protection of the Mississippi Sound’s ecosystem. Marlin Ladner, chairman of the Mississippi Sound Coalition, said the region’s coastal way of life is threatened by pollution from the Mississippi River flowing through the spillway. Gerald Blessey, the coalition’s manager, emphasized the importance of a healthy Sound for fisheries, tourism, and coastal communities.

The roundtable is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, at 10 a.m. at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Hospitality Resort Management Center, Hall A, located at 420 DeBuys Road in Biloxi. The event is open to the public, and written questions will be accepted, according to organizers.
