Investigation under way after Lee County inmate dies

An investigation is under way after an unidentified female inmate was found unresponsive at the Lee County Adult Detention Center and later died, Sheriff Jim Johnson said.

“Detention center staff immediately rendered medical aid and requested emergency medical services be dispatched. The inmate was transported by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased,” Johnson said.

Johnson said investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement responded to both the hospital and the detention center to begin an assessment. He said investigators have found no signs of foul play and that the death appears to have stemmed from a medical emergency.

An autopsy will be conducted at the Mississippi State Crime Lab, Johnson said. He said the autopsy results and the investigation findings will help determine the cause and manner of death, and that state officials will submit their findings to Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office for review once the investigation is complete.
