Lynn Fitch Seeks to Make History as Mississippi’s First Woman Governor
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch is running for governor, aiming to become the first woman elected to lead the state. Fitch, a Republican in her second term as attorney general, made a three-day campaign tour last week to highlight her qualifications for the 2027 race. She plans to join a potentially crowded field to succeed term-limited Gov. Tate Reeves.
Fitch is considered the most serious female gubernatorial contender in Mississippi since Evelyn Gandy’s 1979 bid. Gandy, then-Lt. Gov., led the Democratic primary that year but lost to William Winter in a runoff. At the time, Gandy was the first woman elected to a statewide constitutional office in Mississippi, having served as treasurer, insurance commissioner and lieutenant governor.
Winter, a veteran politician, had previously served in the Mississippi House and held statewide posts, including tax collector, treasurer and lieutenant governor. His 1979 victory was seen as a significant milestone in Mississippi politics, especially given the era’s racial and political tensions.
Gandy’s campaign was historic for breaking gender barriers in Mississippi politics. Fitch will be the first woman serving in a statewide office in Mississippi to run for governor since Gandy. Although some speculated that Amy Tuck, who served as lieutenant governor from 2000 to 2008, might run for governor, she chose to step away from politics after a career at Mississippi State University.
Other women who might have been considered strong candidates, such as Cindy Hyde-Smith, opted for different paths. Hyde-Smith was elected as agriculture commissioner in 2011 and later became the first woman to serve as a U.S. senator from Mississippi. With surrounding states like Arkansas and Alabama already led by female Republican governors, Fitch’s bid could mark a historic moment for Mississippi if successful.
Observers note that the political landscape in the South is shifting, with women vying for governorships in Georgia, Florida, Texas and Tennessee. Fitch’s campaign aims to capitalize on this momentum and make history as Mississippi’s first woman governor.
